Dinner...it's about Time

Food For Thought!

The Magic Of The Family Meal

There is something about shared meals, not a holiday or once-in-a-while meal, but a regular, reliable meal, that anchors a family. Experts say that in the teenage years that this daily investment pays some big dividends.  Families that eat together have children that are less likely to smoke, drink, do drugs, get depressed, develop eating disorders, and consider suicide.  These same children are more likely to do well in school, delay having sex, eat their veggies, learn big words, and have better manners.  These statements are backed up by studies done at Columbia University.

Make dinner an event again.  The tradition of eating together has been getting lost as food has become more about convenience than ritual or tradition.  It’s easy to get lost in the fray of grab-and-go and busy schedules.  Try to take the time, even a few days a week, to sit down together and eat.  Put down the phones, have a conversation, learn what is going on in one another’s lives. You will learn something, feel reconnected, and be closer for it.
